Lithoxoidis has been moving between different creative and professional fields for years. On the one hand, there is Art-Sheep.com, the English-language art and culture platform founded in 2012, which continues to maintain its independence, its ironic perspective, dark humour and distinctive relationship with art, culture and pop culture. On the other hand, the metaNEPHTHYS, which specialises in digital identity, design and technology.

If there is one thing that unites them, it is their commitment to identity: to the idea that a project must first develop its own character before deciding how it will be presented, which audience it will address and, above all, what it does not want to become.

The career of Aristides G. Lithoxoidis

There is no perfectly straight line leading from literature and art to digital design and from there to entrepreneurship. Imagery, writing, aesthetics, technology and the need to build something from scratch recur along this journey in various forms.

As regards his journey, Aristides G. Lithoxoidis explains that it was anything but a well-organised plan. «Those who really know me are aware of how carefully I generally plan everything. But in this case, many situations simply arose. Some had more literary merit in the way they came about, and others none at all,», notes.

The absence of an initial plan did not mean there was no continuity. Of everything that emerged along the way, Art-Sheep and metaNEPHTHYS were the ones that took root. Lithoxoidis attributes this to the fact that both were, from the outset, closely aligned with his mindset and outlook; they developed a character of their own and did not merely serve a passing need. Above all, they afforded him a generous measure of freedom: Art-Sheep was able to remain idiosyncratic and independent, whilst metaNEPHTHYS could select projects rather than simply chasing volume.

Both began when he was considerably younger. Looking back on them today, he does not feel that he was fully «ready» for their current form and the demands they place on him. He describes their relationship more as a parallel evolution: the projects grew, he changed, and each new demand they placed on him forced him to acquire something he hadn’t needed until then. He sums it up more simply: «We grew up together».

Adaptability has thus become a necessity. At Art-Sheep, it is now regarded as a fundamental value – not as a distortion of style or content, but as a means of survival within an internet that has changed radically many times since 2012. For metaNEPHTHYS, the same requirement arose from the rapid development of information technology. She attributes this ability to having grown up in different places and changed schools several times. He also attributes it to his constant exposure to art from a young age, hard work and, perhaps above all, rigorous self-criticism.

Art-Sheep.com: The internet’s weird, dark-humour kid from the previous decade

The Art-Sheep It was launched in 2012, when independent online publishing had more scope for eccentricity. A digital magazine could still have a difficult-to-pronounce name, an eccentric style and a strong personality without every decision having to pass through the filter of reach and engagement. English-language and international from the outset, it forged its own language at the intersection of the visual arts, literature, design, architecture, history and culture – both pop and non-pop.

Irony and black humour did not serve as mere embellishments but as an integral part of his editorial identity. An interest in art could remain genuine without being accompanied by the air of solemnity that often surrounds the art world.

The most unusual feature of Art-Sheep.com is that it has insisted on remaining independent. It may attract millions of views during its peak months, but its independence remains perhaps its most commendable feature.

When asked, therefore, what Art-Sheep gained from choosing not to join forces – as many independent digital media outlets have done – with larger media brands, and what the associated costs were, he replies: «The most important thing he achieved was that he remained Art’-Sheep. It seems impossible to imagine that it would retain its identity in any other form. There were opportunities for it to integrate into conventional models, and there was certainly a cost to its failure to do so: in terms of the economy, development, access, and perhaps opportunities. But every such agreement comes at a price. You start by removing the unusual elements because “they don’t work”, then a bit of the humour because it’s not safe enough, then something of the language, and in the end you’re left with a more digestible product that simply isn’t the same thing anymore. Views bring only fleeting excitement. For me, what has always been more important is a sense of “pride in ownership”, a subjective sense of dignity in whatever you do.».

As for whether he has regretted any of those «no’s», he is just as categorical: «On the contrary.».

metaNEPHTHYS: Different right from the name

The digital design and digital architecture market has a curious way of producing companies that promise unique identities with names that often sound very similar: something-Web, something-Net, something-Digital. metaNEPHTHYS already stands out because of its name, but above all because of the way it approaches development.

The company undertakes projects for large companies and organisations, ranging from websites and online shops to applications, digital advertising, branding and broader digital identity solutions. Its approach, however, is not one of mass production. The Aristides Lithoxoidis He says they never thought they would «were competing for appearances» or to attract the largest number of customers. The ability to select projects remained more important than the revenue that volume might generate.

In larger projects, the work does not end with the delivery of a website. It can range from the design of the overall digital identity and bespoke applications to campaigns, promotional material and the technical infrastructure that supports them. For him, this scope is only valuable when the individual components serve the same central purpose and do not simply amount to a collection of unconnected services.

For him, growth does not mean doing the same thing ten times over. It may mean more challenging projects, more demanding collaborations and spending more time on a project. metaNEPHTHYS therefore approaches digital presence less as a catalogue of services and more as a holistic identity-building process: before the website, the app or the campaign comes the question of exactly who it is that is speaking. Mass production may make financial sense; it does not always make creative sense.

Do art and design ultimately overlap? And if so, where?;

In recent years, the word «art» has been used with remarkable generosity. A logo, an interface, a poster, a pair of trainers or a campaign can easily be labelled as such. Lithoxoidis believes that design does not need this elevation: it has value precisely because it operates within constraints, has an audience, a purpose and a function.

«I think we’ve made the word “art” so broad that it’s in danger of meaning nothing at all. An excellent logo’ It can be beautiful, clever, original. We don’t need to call it art to give it value. Art can be contradictory, it may not solve anything, and it may not care whether you understood what it was trying to say. Design It doesn’t have that luxury. Yet they converge in the education of the eye. One cannot speak seriously about aesthetics without history, references and philosophy. When creating a corporate identity, it is worth asking first: if this company were an artistic movement, which one would it be? If it had a philosophical origin, what would that be? What does it consider beautiful and what does it consider vulgar? If you answer these questions, you have already made many of the decisions that will later manifest as colour, typeface, photography or interface. Art and design »they don’t have to be the same to talk to each other’, It addresses the question of whether the need to label every exceptional design as «art» ultimately devalues design more than it elevates it.

So what remains when all the tools change?;

Artificial intelligence and new creative tools are dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of production. Images, text, code and layouts can now be produced in quantities that, just a few years ago, would have required entire teams.

For Lithoxoides, the more production ceases to be a specialised skill in its own right, the greater the value of judgement, taste, education and the ability to choose. The fact that someone can now do in fifteen minutes what used to take fifteen hours does not trouble him; there was no particular moral value in the hardship.

The problem arises afterwards. If you can produce a hundred images in an hour, producing a hundred is no longer impressive. The difficult part is knowing which ones are worth keeping — or having the judgement to decide that none of them are. Tools can level out technical differences much more easily than they can provide historical context, philosophical grounding or aesthetic education. And perhaps this is the paradox of our times: the easier it becomes to create anything, the more important it becomes to know what is worth creating.

We are particularly grateful to LiFO for the feature and for showcasing Art-Sheep.com and metaNEPHTHYS through a discussion on art, design, independence and creativity…

[272

post-62955","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-posts
["GET
